    Fractional Driven Damped Oscillator

The resonances associated with a fractional damped oscillator which is driven by an oscillatory external force are studied. It is shown that such resonances can be manipulated by tuning up either the coefficient of the fractional damping or the order of the corresponding fractional derivatives.Comment: 5 pages, 1 Figure. The Hispanic Community Development Action Project, that I initiated in the fall of 1996 was to create a Hispanic center. The goal of this project was to establish a center that would advocate participation in identifying issues and possible responses in the areas that concern Latinos. The aim was to bring as many members of the community together as possible in an effort to make a positive impact on economic development projects and other community issues, while at the same time forming a citywide coalition of Hispanics and non-Hispanics to work on these and future issues on an ongoing basis. This coalition of Hispanics and others will collaborate with the Hispanic Center in identifying research and outreach needs, assess the implementation process, and advise the faculty on changing needs and opportunities in the community. Molecular pathways of telomere maintenance

Telomeres are the physical ends of the linear eukaryotic chromosomes, protecting them against being recognised as double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs) and preventing them from fusing with each other. Due to the progressive shortening of telomeric DNA during each round of DNA replication, telomeres eventually lose their protective capacity. This “end replication problem” is counteracted by telomerase. Nevertheless, telomerase is not expressed at sufficient levels to prevent telomere attrition in most human somatic cells, which impacts two critical features of human health. On the one hand, progressive telomere shortening results in replicative senescence, which is a hallmark of ageing. In contrast, reactivation of telomerase is a characteristic in most cancer cells, allowing them to divide indefinitely. For these reasons, uncovering molecular details in different aspects of telomere biology is highly relevant. My work covers parts of three main features of telomere biology: telomere protection, the end replication problem, and telomere replication stress. Firstly, in terms of telomere protection, we investigated the role and consequences of telomeres depleted of the major protein associated with double-stranded telomeric DNA in budding yeast, Rap1. Secondly, to investigate how telomerase is recruited to telomeres to solve the end replication problem, we determined that Rap1-depleted telomeres dramatically increases the telomere extension frequency. Finally, besides the end replication problem, there is a second and less-recognised problem where the DNA replication forks often stall and collapse while traversing telomere sequences. To investigate these characteristics, we examined the properties of interstitial telomeric sequences (telomere sequences located internally in the genome)

Expert system development for hard disk drive failure analysis

The Computer\u27s Hard Disk Drive is a complex high technology device, diagnosis of a failure is difficult even using sophisticated test equipments. These Drives are expensive and returning a new one when it fails within the warranty period is not an option. The failed drive must be tested and repaired. In the repair process the analysis and diagnosis of the failures is a key point in the process where decisions regarding the repair process that the failed Drive will follow. Therefore, there is a requirement to perform an effective analysis and provide an accurate diagnosis. The standard system utilized for diagnosis was based on human capacity, this study proves that the deficiencies of the standard failure analysis method does not provide satisfactory results. On the other hand, this study proposes alternatives that incorporate the expert\u27s knowledge and makes it available for analysis technicians, analyzing every Drive
